Stroke Smarts: Check it Out!

According to the American Heart Association stroke is one of the leading causes of long term disability and the third leading cause of death in the US.  There are many signs that a person may be having a stroke, but a lot of people do not know what signs to look for when this situation occurs.  The following is a list of the more obvious signs that I have learned through study, other individuals and various publications. Check with your doctor for a complete list of signs and symptons.

1.  Ask the person a question.  If they cannot answer or are confused. Check it out.

2.  Have the person stick out their tongue.  If it is curled to one side or in someway abnormal.  Check it out.

3.  Ask them to raise their arms up over their heads.  If they can’t.  Check it out.

4.  Difficulty walking or problems with balance.  Check it out.

5.  Unusual or severe headaches.  Check it out.

6.  Weakness and or numbness anywhere in the body.  Check it out.

7.  If you see blood coming from ears, nose, etc.  Check it out.

8.  They shut their eyes…light bothers them or difficulty with vision.  Check it out.

Check it out by calling 911 immediately!

According to most statistics medical help within the first couple of hours after a stroke can mean life or death.  Symptoms vary depending upon the kind of stroke involved.

My younger sister died from a hemorrhagic stroke when she was only 50 years old.  Her only symptom was a headache that would not go away.  While washing dishes she fell to the floor and within moments  lost consciousness.  The doctors operated but was unable to save her and within hours she was gone.

An earlier trip to emergency could have saved her life.

Do what ever you can to help to prevent strokes.  If you smoke…quit!  Get more exercise.  Just use common sense, watch your blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.  Every thing in moderation is the key. Check with your doctor for a complete list of things that you can do to help prevent a stroke.

Take good care of yourself.  I want you “my friend” to live a long, healthy and prosperous life.

To your health!

I welcome your comments.  Please feel free to share a short story.  Please stay on subject.

  3. Delighted to find someone who will not beat around the bush and SAY the TRUTH about the ill effects of smoking! In our society, with all it’s other dis-illusions and unrealistic views regarding the Politically Correct comments, it appears that we do not want to “offend” the smoking population! I have lost 2 parents to the ill effects of the ciggarette, and do not want to lose any of my friends!
Great suggestions! Keep thinking, we need all the healthy input we can get!!! Bravo!
